God's Pattern For Christian ServiceBy Gbile AkanniReview “Sanctify them by Thy truth. Thy Word is truth.” John 17:17 This book examines what God looks for in those who would be involved in His work. It draws a lot of illustration from the life and ministry of Deborah in the book of Judges. It is a 143 page paper back, divided into 7 chapters. Chapter One describes the kind of people; men and women God seeks to use. God’s power is neither scarce nor running out, what hinders God is a shortage of quality, usable men and women. Deborah is introduced as such a person that God found usable especially at a time when God’s word was scarce in Israel. Chapter Two describes the order God employs in finding and using people for His service. This is taken from the book of Ecclesiastes 9:8-10, and can be summarised as: 1 Personal walk 2 The Home 3 The Ministry This order according to the author must be progressively established and not mixed up. The life that emanates from a personal walk will cause the home and eventually the ministry to be relevant in God’s work. This chapter further looked at cases in the Bible where this order was mixed up and the consequences of such mix up. Chapters Three to Six is an in-depth exposition into the life of Deborah and how she fulfilled this order set out in the word of God and as a result of this, God was able to use her effectively. These chapters examined her personal life, her home life (as the wife of Lapidoth) and eventually how she was able to fulfil God’s calling on her life. Chapter Seven concludes the book with a peek into the life and person of Lapidoth, the husband and “covering” of Deborah the servant of God. It examines God’s original plan for marriage before the fall of Adam and how God has made a way in Christ Jesus to re-instate His first and original order. It ends by challenging us to arise and become usable of God, adhering to the divine order that God established and still uses even in our present day. God's Pattern For Christian Service is recommended for anyone who sincerely wants to be used of God and is willing to allow God, the “Owner” of the harvest to prepare and send him/her out as a worker in His (God's) vineyard.
